Project Mooncircle‘s Finest Ego series, with compilations focusing on geographic regions that have so far included Russia, Australia/New Zealand and Japan, has been integral in highlighting the global nature of the curious electronic/hip hop hybrid that I’ve grown so tired of referring to as “beat music”. The latest installment in the series dips its toes into perhaps the deepest pool of talent yet, focusing on like-minded producers from Ireland and the UK. The compilation covers most of the bases involved with the forward-thinking experimental hip hop movement, including a few takes on the 8-bit-saturated sound that threatens to become the genre’s latest cliche alongside tracks like Lapalux‘s beautiful “Lost Consonants”, another slice of hazy wonder from the young Essex producer who seems to be the flavor of the moment for this kind of music.
